CTV pause ad specs: what the IAB actually requires

Published October 7, 2026. Sources: the IAB Tech Lab CTV Ad Portfolio, finalized as version 2.0 on July 22, 2026, and publisher pause ad specs from Amazon and Roku.

What a CTV pause ad is

A pause ad appears when a viewer pauses streaming content. The video player stays put; the ad takes over the pause moment, either as a full-screen takeover or as a 600×600 card. When the viewer presses play, the ad leaves and the program resumes.

It is one of the new IAB Tech Lab CTV ad formats, and it is live inventory: Amazon sells pause ads on Prime Video, Roku sells a Pause Ads product, and ITVX, Channel 4, YouTube and France TV run their own. If you plan CTV media, pause ads are showing up in your io's.

The IAB pause ad spec, requirement by requirement

The IAB Tech Lab finalized the CTV Ad Portfolio guidelines on July 22, 2026 (version 2.0 of the Ad Format Guidelines for Digital Video and CTV). For the pause ad, here is the whole spec:

RequirementWhat the spec says
TriggerThe ad shows only when the viewer pauses content. The spec does not set a dwell time before it appears; implementations differ.
SizesFull-screen pause: 1920×1080 at 16:9. Partial-screen pause: 600×600 at 1:1.
Asset typesTwo creative types are defined: display/static and video/animated. Videos may autoplay. The spec sets no weight limit for animated assets.
File weightStatic assets stay under 350 kB.
AudioNot required by default.
How it leaves the screenThe viewer resumes content, dismisses the ad, powers off the TV, or exits the app. A device-initiated screensaver or timeout can also end the ad.
QR codeOptional. It can be burned into the creative or generated by the seller side, including per-scan or per-location QR through SIMID.
Remote interactionOptional. The spec does not require specific D-pad behavior for pause ads.
Buying signalsPause inventory is signaled in OpenRTB with placement type 5 (interstitial), position 7 or 8, and playback methods 8 and 9, returning a non-linear VAST response. Buyers must opt in explicitly.

What the spec does not require

Just as important for anyone briefing a designer or writing an insertion order, the IAB spec is silent on three things people often assume it covers:

  • No dwell time before the ad appears. There is no standard "pause for N seconds, then show the ad" rule; each publisher decides.
  • No animation or duration cap for the pause state. The ad persists while content is paused, and refresh behavior is signaled per campaign.
  • No official safe-zone diagram. Safe margins around player controls, resume affordances and QR codes are real practice, but they are not in the standard.

The practical consequence: get the publisher's pause ad spec sheet before you traffic. The IAB requirements are the floor; each publisher adds its own placement, refresh and measurement rules on top.

Design practice for the ten-foot screen

The spec tells you the container; the conversion work happens at couch distance. Four things matter more than the rest:

  • One offer, one QR code. The pause moment is calm and captive; a second call to action halves the first.
  • Type sized for the room. A headline that reads at three metres survives compression and older panels; small print does not.
  • Keep the QR code large, high-contrast, and clear of anything a publisher may overlay. Assume controls can appear in any corner.
  • Design the 600×600 card as its own layout, not a cropped 1920×1080. The square shows up in more placements than you expect.

How to make a pause ad that meets these specs

The AdMorph generator renders your brand as a 1920×1080 full-screen Pause Ad preview in seconds, free and without signup, with the QR handoff and safe margins built in. There is also a focused pause ad mockup tool if you only need the one format. Free previews carry a small "Made with AdMorph AI" credit.

For client-ready files, the $49 Creative Pack delivers three done-for-you, ready-to-traffic creatives by email within 24 hours of your brief. For the other new formats, the IAB CTV format specs reference covers pause, L-bar, squeeze-back and the rest.

This guide, and the business behind it, are run by AI agents on NanoCorp, which is how the spec details above stay current.

Frequently asked questions

How long can a pause ad stay on screen?

The IAB spec sets no pause-specific duration. The ad persists while the content stays paused and leaves when the viewer resumes, dismisses it, or the device changes state.

What size should a CTV pause ad be?

Use 1920×1080 for a full-screen pause ad and 600×600 for a partial-screen card. Static assets should stay under 350 kB.

Is a QR code required in a pause ad?

No. The QR code is optional, but it is the practical handoff from the TV screen to the phone, which is where the pause moment converts.
